About the Emergency Active Travel Fund
In May, the Government announced funding to make it easier for people to choose alternatives to public transport. A series of measures are being rolled out to encourage more people to cycle or walk instead, including allocating local authorities a share of £225 million, to create pop up and permanent cycle lanes and reallocate road space.
Swindon Borough Council were awarded just over £200,000 in this first phase. We consulted with local people via our ward councillors, and received an amazing response, with over 65 schemes put forward. The Department for Transport required the schemes to be in place within a matter of weeks, so we prioritised schemes that were most needed, but deliverable in this short time frame.
In November, we were allocated a further £730,000 and the Government dropped the “emergency” nature of the fund. We are in the process of developing the shortlisted schemes, and will provide updates on these pages.
