Liden Drive’s new path
A key missing link in the local footway network along Liden Drive, between the subway providing access to the Liden district centre up to White Edge Moor (a total length of 161 metres) has recently been upgraded.
This scheme has seen a very narrow, informal path arrangement with a gravel finish now become a 2 metre wide path throughout, featuring a tarmac surfacing. This enhancement now offers high quality infrastructure along the verge, which is more direct and gives greater natural surveillance for pedestrians compared to the parallel route which heads away from Liden Drive towards the Liden Lagoon.
The completion of the path fulfils the priorities of the ‘Keep Swindon Moving’ section of the Swindon Plan, by enhancing accessibility to walking and cycling networks, to foster healthier and more sustainable communities, improving air quality, promoting physical activity and a quality of life for residents.
These infrastructure works were completed in the middle of March 2025 and financed from grant funding, which was awarded from Active Travel England (ATE). ATE are the government agency which provides funding for cycling and walking capital projects to local authorities. As set out in the Swindon Plan, this scheme highlights Swindon Borough Council are committed to promoting and enhancing active travel through opportunities for additional funding such as external grants.
