About this ride

D Day – On the evening 5th June 1944 the peace in the south of England was shattered as 362 transport aircraft from fifteen RAF squadrons started their engines from eight separate airfields. The first aircraft to take off from RAF Blakehill were six Dakotas from No 233 Sqn towing Horsa gliders at 22.50 hrs. They were followed by 24 Dakotas carrying troops. Also involved was No 437 Sqn from The Royal Canadian Air Force which had been assigned to 46 Group and was also equipped with Dakottas.

Our ride takes us out via Highworth and Castle Eaton to Down Ampney for our first stop at the site of the Old Airfield of RAF Down Ampney. We then make our way to Cricklade for refreshments and then we go South West to what is now Chelworth Industrial estate but formerly was RAF Blakehill Farm. We return via Blunsdon Railway Station, Tadpole Village and Broad Blunsdon.

Please bring a face mask; you have to wear it on entering a café and in the event of first aid being required. For all our rides you should bring at least a spare inner tube and a pump. If your wheels are bolted on then a spanner that fits the nuts is also essential. Helmets are not compulsory but most definitely recommended. You should dress appropriately for the weather, and consider bringing your mobile phone along with cash or debit card for the coffee stop. Some café’s only take card payments.

This is a challenging ride in terms of distance and a few climbs; We want you to enjoy your rides with us. If you think this might be a bit too much please check out our other rides
