In the 1840’s the Great Western Railway chose to site its locomotive repair works in what was open countryside mid-way between Bristol and London, near to the small market town of Swindon. That decision changed Swindon forever. The first railway workers and the generations that followed them forged Swindon’s character and pioneered the town’s evolution into a dynamic and prosperous industrial centre in the south-west of England. Join this guided walking tour to hear Swindon’s GWR story, one of pioneering ideas, community initiatives and social change.

Pre booking preferred, contact the organiser, Karen Phmister on 07392 109774 or email kphimister@swindon.gov.uk
