Thames Water works to temporarily shut Covingham Drive cycle path

The construction of a new pumping station off Merlin Way means that Thames Water will be shutting the Covingham Drive cycle path from 2nd March to early May 2026.

These upgrades form a key part of the drainage strategy for the growing NEV community east of the A419. They are necessary to meet the future demand from new homes and to help protect the environment by providing a modern, resilient wastewater network.

The next phase involves installing the rising main sewer pipes from the new pumping station along Covingham Drive cycle lane to the Messenger Pub roundabout. Installation will take place in sections using both open‑cut and directional drilling methods. The whole length of the cycle lane from the Messenger pub to the roundabout at Merlin Way will be shut for the whole period.

What to expect

  • We plan to begin mobilising on site from 2 March 2026 for deliveries and preparation.
  • Drilling of the new pipe is scheduled to start on 16 March 2026, with completion expected by 5 May 2026.
  • To carry out the work safely, the Covingham Drive cycle lane/path will be closed to the public during this period.
  • Access for residents, businesses, and emergency services will be maintained at all times.
